　　bare trees black railing
　　an eastern star set like a pearl atop a steeple
$ M6 L- B* [' L; h% j　　that shadows the doorway
　　where the one-armed card shark squats
8 D" ~! ^) }/ g# U$ g6 J7 V" ^% [　　shuffling his deck on a milk crate
* T2 h0 C7 p9 m" [- F# j　　waiting for the No. 6 bus to discharge
　　the off-duty cop the seamstress
! Y8 ]5 T: K: K' K: J% _+ m, E　　the drunken mechanic and the clerk on crutches
　　who pauses before his building to watch
8 o5 A4 Y+ `7 O　　the mechanic lose three dollars at blackjack
% p" _. C6 j$ a6 b5 ~8 l　　and then stiffly ascends the five flights
　　to his two rooms on a shaftway
　　hanging his coat on a hook
　　and sitting down at the table
+ h) E% D1 B+ G! k　　on which this morning he placed
. ]  R, [* ~9 s, w+ B　　a soup bowl and spoon
　　a tin of crackers and the crossword
/ E, ^3 h1 v) Y( O　　puzzle he had been laboring over
9 d, @. k% _6 v　　beneath the gaze of his late wife
% ?( a0 V* i8 {! t8 `　　her color photograph propped up in a small frame
/ [, p6 g& F4 D  H7 i1 q　　a young woman in a boxy dress and felt cap
　　waving shyly by the edge of a lake
　　where over her shoulder beneath a clear sky
　　a sailboat rides the wind
　　passengers on the polished deck
8 z1 k' p1 O1 Y5 R　　gazing at the glowing mountain peaks
: t1 A! b* f2 g8 b5 h" e　　the cypresses lining the shore
# N+ j6 d4 l6 J+ \4 X% u　　and the pink palazzi with ancient gardens
$ u1 {6 i' @4 G0 ^, N4 @8 n　　these men and women in white
2 T. {; T& H0 A3 k9 X, L5 ]& c8 n* A　　who seem to live upon the water
( g6 d. V* G- ^+ V　　gliding among themselves oblivious to strife
! g5 G8 l1 S: E8 P# a3 ~　　and all else that wears a body down
8 g2 F$ L6 }/ P# j, w3 t( t　　some sipping from crystal goblets
