You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling,

is reflected from the windows of the almshouse
0 ~. v3 ^. P! e6 s as brightly as from the rich man’s abode;
7 f1 ^* b* Z% ~. `6 K! X the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.
* p/ m% j/ ^4 {+ q6 q: E7 a8 ~7 @ I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, H8 Y' f' ?( O5 C
and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
3 m- c3 F7 \3 x The town’s poor seem to me often to live
# o) b" Z2 s$ g. i the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply
$ w G9 w1 g& ?- o great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that
% V& a7 T7 ?: t they are above being supported by the town;
/ L1 R! i- o1 A but it often happens that they are not above
( I. _+ G! b0 J; |' \ supporting themselves by dishonest means,
$ ^/ W ~% K( q( `; ^4 x H; { which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty V% k1 n3 l g# c% j
like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much- M8 K3 y) f _: T$ q
to get new things, whether clothes or friends.
, l( J$ }$ ?. N/ G+ d8 O( f Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change.
